Why is the cornea clear and the sclera not?
The cornea and sclera are very similar in structure and are actually made of the same type of collagen. The cornea collagen is arrayed more uniformly, but more important, the cornea is very dehydrated compared to the sclera.
If the cornea hydrates, it turns white. The responsibility of the endothelium is to act as a pump and remove excess fluid from the cornea and pull it back into the aqueous.
