What is pseudoexfoliation syndrome?
PXF is a type of glaucoma that can be seen in patients of Scandinavian descent. A white basement-membrane-like material forms on the surface of the lens and on the zonules. This material is rough, and rubs off pigment from the back surface of the iris as the iris constricts and dilates. This releases pigment and PXF material that can clog the trabecular meshwork.
Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is important to detect before cataract surgery. This is because the material makes the zonules (those ‘springs’ supporting the lens) weak. The zonules can break during cataract surgery and make the surgery more risky.

You said there are complications in cataract surgery when the zonules are weakened. What happens exactly? If you have PXF, should you not have cataract surgery?
you said PEX is a systemic condition… what are the systemic manifestations in it and associations particularly in reference to kidney function?
I had cataract removed from Rt. eye Oct of 2011. All went great. Now that I planned on having the cataract removed from the lf. eye, the Dr. tells me I have pseudoexfoliation and possibly this surgery may not go as well as the first. Now I don’t know what to do. Would you recommend that I should let well enough, alone and not have the surgery?
