choroid

The choroid is a layer of blood vessels that lie underneath the retina and supply some of the blood supply to the retina. The choroid circulation also helps remove the waste products from the photoreceptors (rods and cones) and processes them back into the circulatory system.  Conditions like macular degeneration create a blockage between the choroid and retina, leading to retinal atrophy over time and vision loss.
