What is amblyopia?
This is visual loss that is not assignable to any organic findings on exam. Amblyopia occurs because of poor nerve wiring during the formative years. If a child doesn’t use one eye (from poor vision, strabismus, etc..) then the wiring to the occipital lobe doesn’t form properly and the child will never see great from that eye as an adult. We treat amblyopia by patching the good eye, forcing the child to use the amblyopic eye.
