What is a PSC and who gets them?
PSC stands for posterior subcapsular cataract. This is when an opacity forms at the back of the lens.
These cataracts can advance suddenly, and are seen more often in those with diabetes or on long-term steroids, but anyone can get them. The are removed just like any other cataract, though sometimes require a YAGÂ capsulotomy down the road if all the opacity isn’t removed at surgery.
I have PSC from injectable steroids due to inflamed rotator cuff, tennis elbow, etc. Up to 10 shots over a 6 year period. My question is this: Once the cataract is operated on, will I need glasses. I understand that right away I will see perfectly, but does this perfect eyesight diminish and will I need glasses again. Right now I have bifocals with -6 for distance. I’m 53. My doc suggests that this surgery will be a two for one in that it will correct my cataract and be refractive surgery (Lasik). Sounds great, is it true?
