What eye findings are suspicious for shaken-baby syndrome?
Retinal bleeding in all four quadrants of the retina, and at all levels of retinal depth. Schisis cavities (a split between layers of the retina) is a bit more specific finding.
If you suspect shaken baby, an eye exam needs to be done within a few days, as the retinal hemorrhages clear up quickly. A detailed eye exam/drawing by an attending ophthalmologist, or photos, need to be taken.
Of note, non-eye findings include:
- Intracranial bleeding
- Brain edema
- Bone fractures
- Bruises along trunk
- Torn frenulum (under your upper gum)
red flags that shouln`t be missed, always sad to read on these
