  1. Benzalkonium is commonly referred to as “BAK” in the eye world. This preservative is extremely common in medicated eye drops (especially generic glaucoma drops).

    While effective as a preservative (for keeping the eye drop bottle from being colonized by bacteria) BAK can be irritating to the cornea.
