Doctors tend to use the acronym ARMD a lot … it’s a lot shorter than writing out “macular degeneration.” Also, the abbreviation points out that this process is one that occurs with age. There are other sorts of degeneration of the macula that AREN’T age related … such as myopic degneration (macular damage in people who are extremely near-sighted).
