Alrex
A mild steroid eye drop. Useful in cases of ocular inflammation and irritation. This drop has the same ingredient (loteprednol) as Lotemax but with a third of the steroid concentration. By reducing the steroid concentration, this decreases the chance of untoward reactions such as premature cataract formation and glaucoma pressure spikes.
Alrex is a milder steroid that is great for low-grade inflammation. It is about a third as powerful as Lotemax and well tolerated by my patients.
Steroid eye drops have a certain amount of risk associated with them … particularly the increased risk of infection and steroid-related increases in eye pressure.
Alrex has a lower amount of steroid and the chance of these complications is greatly reduced … at least, that is what the drug reps keep telling me.
